How to choose free weights
- Start with the basicsAn Olympic bar and plates cover squats, presses and deadlifts. Add dumbbells for single-arm work and a bench for presses.
- Check the hole sizeOlympic plates have a 50 mm hole. Our Olympic bars, EZ bar and 152 cm bar take Olympic plates, and standard plates don't fit the 152 cm bar.
- Bumpers if you drop the barBumper plates are designed to be dropped. Use them on rubber flooring at least 15 mm thick.
- Fixed or adjustableFixed dumbbells and barbells are ready to use, which suits busy gyms. An adjustable system such as the MX Select MX80, which replaces 26 fixed bars, saves space at home.
- Plan storageAllow floor space for a dumbbell rack and a plate tree. The Shua Dumbbell Rack holds up to 10 pairs, and the Shua plate trees hold up to 150 kg.
Free weights questions
What free weights do I need for a home gym?
Most home gyms start with a set of dumbbells and an adjustable bench, then add an Olympic bar and plates if there's room. If space is tight, an adjustable system such as the MX Select MX80 replaces a rack of fixed bars. Call +971 4 570 9616 and we'll help you plan it.
What is the difference between bumper plates and rubber coated plates?
Rubber coated plates are made from cast iron covered in a rubber coating. Bumper plates are generally made entirely from rubber, are the same diameter at every weight and are designed to be dropped.
What are the chrome and gold dumbbells made of?
Powercore Chrome Dumbbells are solid electroplated steel with knurled grips, sold as a 10-pair set from 2.5 kg to 25 kg. The Powercore Gold Dumbbells Set is steel with an electroplated gold finish, sold as 12 pairs from 2.5 kg to 30 kg.
Do you supply free weights for commercial gyms?
Yes. We supply dumbbell sets, Olympic bars, plates, benches and storage, and we plan and supply complete gyms across the GCC. See turnkey gym solutions.
